Other information

Mary Tavy Women’s Institute started, as far as we have records, in 1949 with Miss Gallop, who started Blackdown Nursing Home, one of the founder members and many well known village names feature in our records – Mrs Down, (Downs garage and coaches), Mrs Warne (Royal Standard) to name a couple. We meet on the second Thursday of the month in the Coronation Hall at 2pm except in August when a walk is arranged. A few years ago we found that there was a demand for an evening institute for younger women who were working during the day and Tor and Tavy came into being. ( is their contact)

Always keen to help the local community some years ago some enterprising members decided that they could do better than the planned grass verge at the top of Bal Lane and the WI garden came into being and is still maintained by an ageing but enthusiastic band of ladies helped by money from the Parish Council.

This year the WI nationally celebrated its Centenary. We joined with other West Devon and East Cornwall Institutes and had a splendid day in Launceston Town Hall with ‘Live Streaming’ of the main meeting at the Albert Hall – it goes without saying that excellent food and a lot of tea was consumed!

Each meeting follows a similar format – a Speaker, (topics range widely), tea and cake, then any WI business – arrangements for County events and outings, our own trips, our Spring plant sale, Carol Service, Group meetings (we are part of the Four Rivers group which includes St Andrew’s Whitchurch, Gulworthy, Bere Ferrers, High Moorland which is Princetown area). We are a very friendly group most of us are involved with other things so joining the WI is a very good way of meeting other women and making friends.
